A Boy Named Sue, Baby Names… Help?

a boy named sue by shel silverstein

Yes, it’s a bit extreme, but you do have to admire the practical approach to naming in this Shel Silverstein-penned classic. A name with a purpose.

We’ve been racking our brains to come up with the right name for the baby boy I’m due to deliver in the next month. The kids came through with some strong prospects, as expected. Jonah (7) and Murphy (5) suggested Bear Fight, Bear Claw, etc. Charlotte (2) voted for Jonah Colorado, which I’m guessing is some type of homage to her brother and closest ally. Isabella (10) came through with several possibilities as well, but we still seem to be stuck.

So this is an open request to all of those with names to share. What was your approach?

I have a 3 yr old named Hugo, fits him perfectly. I also had twin girls 2 months ago and named them Marlo Amalia and Sabine Luvenia. Everyone thinks Marlo is a boy! I don’t mind. Gotta go with what you like.
    I also like:
    Angus
    Beau
    Sebastian
I like to look through our families genealogy records for ideas.
    Good luck!

We didn’t pick a specific name beforehand, we just narrowed it down to a short list (which we then forgot to bring to the hospital). Post-delivery, we sitting around looking at our new bundle of joy and wondering what to call her, so my husband got out the laptop, which had our original list of 60+ names on it. He took one look at the huge list and said “Hey, how about ‘Piper’?” It was a name that he had disliked originally and I snuck it back onto the bottom of the list. But it was perfect for her, and still is. Sometimes, you just know, right?

I like Jude, Graham, Harper, and Ryhs for boys. Can you tell I’ve been watching a lot of British TV shows, lol?

lol, when we had our 2 year old, we asked our kids and got Cinderella, Number 5, Jake Blaze (they knew it was a girl) and I think the other one was New Zealand (where we’re from)
Some names I like for boys are: Noah, (lol — although you have a Jonah … so that might be good or weird), Jack, Racen (pronounced Ray-sin). I have a thousand girls names, but can’t quite think of any boy ones right now!!
    If I remember, I’ll comment again :D

Congratulations — I had no idea! I think names are so personal, my two boys are called Dylan Samuel and Miles Harrison — both very British (although Miles is a bit of a mouthful for the French — he was named Mil-less when he was born!)

Oh dear, we are having the exact same problem. Potentially this could be baby #3 coming into our lives in a couple of months and we cannot think of a name!
The names of our boys are Kaed Rhys and Brayer Quinn, if that helps!

Hi, I just found your blog, it is lovely. We have three children and the first two are sons. Our oldest name is Parker and then we have Holden. Parker was named after one of my students when I was teaching. Holden’s name came from the book Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger. But if our third had been a boy, we had Harrison, Anderson, Liam, and Laurent on our list. Our third was a girl and her name is Lauren. Best of luck, it is so hard finding that perfect name!

I’m a fan of Auden (from the poet WH Auden) or Rockne. I am a fan of weird names like those. Specifically last names of people I admire or street names. Inspiration comes from everywhere. Congrats and good luck with the name picking.

Thank you so much, I really enjoyed reading all of the wonderful comments!

We picked the name River and thought we had it settled for a few days, but yesterday we switched to Noah. We passed that name over a while back, but for some reason it clicked all of a sudden and just feels right.

We were frantic a couple of nights ago when we rushed to the hospital for a false alarm (you would think we’d have it figured out by now but, alas).

I passed the due date today…
