Unlike the full-size hip­pos that cruise the rivers of Africa, pygmy hip­pos are native to the forests and swamps of west­ern Africa and Kenya. They are noc­tur­nal and reclu­sive, mak­ing them very rare to see in the wild–they were unknown out­side of West Africa until the 19^th century.
