    Baby Pygmy Hippo

Unlike the full-size hippos that cruise the rivers of Africa, pygmy hippos are native to the forests and swamps of western Africa and Kenya. They are nocturnal and reclusive, making them very rare to see in the wild–they were unknown outside of West Africa until the 19th century.

    Too cool!

  3. Lovely Ginger Seal Pup

    Seal Pup

    Via The Guardian:

The ginger fur, pink flippers and vivid blue eyes may be why this nearly blind, albino seal pup was rejected by his family and left to fend for himself. He was found by the photographer Anatoly Strakhov who spotted him hiding under some logs on Tyuleniy Island, Russia. Strakhov said: “He wasn’t playing with the other baby seals. He was just hiding and waiting for his mother to come and feed him.”

Things I never knew: sea otters often hold hands to keep from drifting apart while sleeping. Amazing!

This tiny Royal Antelope calf was born at the San Diego Zoo on February 8th, weighing just 17 ounces. The smallest of the antelopes, these creatures only measure 10–12 inches high and 9–10 pounds when fully grown. Simply amazing!

  8. A Boy Named Sue, Baby Names… Help?

a boy named sue by shel silverstein

Yes, it’s a bit extreme, but you do have to admire the practical approach to naming in this Shel Silverstein-penned classic. A name with a purpose.

We’ve been racking our brains to come up with the right name for the baby boy I’m due to deliver in the next month. The kids came through with some strong prospects, as expected. Jonah (7) and Murphy (5) suggested Bear Fight, Bear Claw, etc. Charlotte (2) voted for Jonah Colorado, which I’m guessing is some type of homage to her brother and closest ally. Isabella (10) came through with several possibilities as well, but we still seem to be stuck.

So this is an open request to all of those with names to share. What was your approach?

  10. The Family Duck

    pet duck

When you live on a farm, you frequently become the go-to source for those with pets that have “outgrown” their space. We recently acquired a new pet duck, Quackie, who surprisingly behaves much like a family dog. We have a number of wild ducks on our lake, but never one that was domesticated like Quackie. He’s really a lot of fun, swimming in the lake with the kids (he likes to dive and swim between their legs) and generally following you wherever you go (fully expecting to be allowed in the house).

Ducks = the new family dog?
