The Family Duck

When you live on a farm, you fre­quently become the go-to source for those with pets that have “out­grown” their space. We recently acquired a new pet duck, Quackie, who sur­pris­ingly behaves much like a fam­ily dog. We have a num­ber of wild ducks on our lake, but never one that was domes­ti­cated like Quackie. He’s really a lot of fun, swim­ming in the lake with the kids (he likes to dive and swim between their legs) and gen­er­ally fol­low­ing you wher­ever you go (fully expect­ing to be allowed in the house).

Ducks = the new fam­ily dog?

    My husband’s fam­ily had a duck when he was lit­tle. “Ping” lived in the back yard with the fam­ily dog. This was in LA, not the coun­try! After Ping came on the scene, the dog decided he liked let­tuce, so as to com­pete with Ping for his food! lol

    Aw, we duck-sat for a cou­ple weeks recently. Ben, the duck we were watch­ing, sounds very much like your duck–very social­ized! It was a lot of fun keep­ing him (except for all the poop!)

    Quackie is dar­ling! I love that he swims between the kids’ legs. That is just too darn cute. I adore ducks, yet despite the fact that he loves the taste of duck eggs, I can’t con­vince my hunky far­mguy that we really *need* to add some happy lit­tle quack­ers to our menagerie. :)
