Hide Your Treasures in a DIY S’mores Box

I’ve always been a fan of “spy gear” or items that look like one thing but are actually another. You know, like the book that opens to reveal a small safe inside. Of course, they’re lots more fun when you make them yourself.

This tasty s’more is made out of Perler beads, and while it might not look exactly like the real deal, it will hide some of your favorite small items inside!

The compartment in this s’more is just the right size for holding jewelry, memory cards, or other treasures.

Once you’ve made your first box, you’ll be ready to make more. Perhaps you’ll even come up with more treats to store your treasures!

What You Need

  • Perler beads in light tan, dark tan, brown, and white
  • Large square bead board
  • Ironing paper
  • Iron
  • Strong glue or hot glue

How-To

Step 1
Make the graham crackers. Make a filled-in square that is a 16 x 16 grid. Use light tan beads. Add a grid of dark tan beads within the square to be the cracker indents.

Step 2
Place the ironing paper over the beads and fuse them together with the iron. Move the iron in a circular motion for about 8-10 seconds. Check to see if the beads are melting and holding together. Iron a little longer if necessary.

When the first side is done, flip it over, place the paper on top, and iron the second side of the graham cracker.

Repeat to make a second graham cracker.

Step 3
Make a brown 14 x 14 empty square frame. Iron both sides like you did in step 2. This will be the chocolate.

Make several white 11 x 11 empty square frames. Iron both sides like you did in step 2. These will form the marshmallow.

The number of white pieces you will need depends on how flat your beads get after ironing. When stacked, they should be at least 5/8” tall.

Step 4
Glue and stack the white marshmallow pieces on the center of one of the graham cracker pieces. An adult should do this step depending on the type of glue you are using.

Glue the brown chocolate piece to the center of the other graham cracker piece.

Give the glue adequate time to dry, and then it is ready for use! Store your favorite small items inside for safe keeping.

For more food boxes, try making sandwich cookies on round boards or a PB&J sandwich on the square board. Just make sure that the empty square frames that form the base and lid will fit together.
