These masks by Bertjan Pot are definitely eye-catching!! The Netherlands-based designer has worked with many different mediums but our favorite project of his has got to be this colorful mask series. It all started when Pot was trying to make a hand-sewn rug. As he was sewing, the cord wasn’t sitting flat and kept bubbling up to form a 3D shape instead. Pot’s assistant commented that the rug looked more like a mask and Bertjan has been sewing new masks ever since.
Many of these masks have a primitive look to them, which Pot says is partly because of the primitive method he uses to make them. As he makes more and more masks, he gets lots of feedback from admirers suggesting other masks from around the world for him to look at.
Pot has also worked with many different companies to create unique interior design products like lamps and chairs. When designing these pieces, he often experiments with new materials and techniques on a smaller scale until he has a better understanding of them, and then translates what he’s learned to a larger scale.
Bertjan Pot has won many design awards for his vast work and we can certainly see why! We can’t keep our eyes off these masks and can’t wait to follow along as he adds more to the collection.
