Don’t have an alphabet cookie cutter set? Here’s a tip –  head to your local dollar store and grab a pack of plastic letters (You know, the kind your 2-year-old likes to stick on the fridge). They generally don’t have magnets on the back and are hollow, making them a perfectly affordable cookie cutter option!

What You Need

Makes one 8-9 inch pie

  • One recipe pie crust dough (recipe below)
  • Green pie crust dough (dye a small amount of the pie crust dough green)
  • Alphabet cookie cutters
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • Pastry brush
  • Parchment paper

Step 1
Cover an 8-9” Pie Dish with a thin layer of pie crust dough. Trim excess dough from the sides of the dish with a sharp knife.

Step 2
Roll remaining dough between two sheets of parchment paper to a 1/8” thickness. Cut out every letter of the alphabet except for letters ‘H’ and ‘I’. Set aside.

Roll the green dough to a 1/8” thickness. Cut out the letters ‘H’ and ‘I’.

Brush the rim of the pie crust with the beaten egg.

Step 5
Place the letters of the alphabet around the rim of the pie crust starting with ‘A’ and ending with ‘Z’, pressing them into the crust lightly to seal.

Step 6
Brush the letters with beaten egg.

Fill pie crust with your desired filling and bake at 375 degrees on the middle rack of the oven for 30 minutes, or until filling bubbles. Remove and let cool.

Pie Crust Recipe

Ingredients

Makes enough crust for one covered pie.

  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons white sugar
  • ¼ cup vegetable shortening
  • 12 tablespoons butter, cold and cut into cubes
  • ¼ cup + ice water

Directions

Place the flour, salt, and sugar in the bowl of a food processor. Pulse a few times until combined. Add the shortening and butter and process until the mixture is crumbly. With the food processor running, drizzle in ice water, one tablespoon at a time until the mixture forms a firm dough. Press dough into a ball and wrap in plastic wrap. If not using immediately, store in the fridge.
