When we saw the awesome pattern on these tea towels, we knew we had to recreate it DIY-style. We bought the tea towels (of course!) and then got to work. This little tin recipe box was the perfect candidate for this DIY – we’d found it at a thrift store a while back and it was just waiting to be turned into something good!

Believe it or not, we didn’t even have to buy tissue paper to match the tea towel’s pattern – we already had it all in our stash! With a little help from Mod Podge (one of our all-time favorite craft supplies!) this DIY makeover took no time. Next time you see a cute and colorful tea towel, snag it and make a matching DIY recipe tin to match – it’s the perfect hostess gift! We’ve grown quite attached to these matching cuties though, so they’re not going anywhere. Keep reading to see how to make your own!

• Mod Podge (Gloss)
• Tin recipe box
• Pencil
• Mod Podge brush applicator
• Martha Stewart Multi-Surface Satin Acrylic Craft Paint
• Paintbrush
• Tissue paper
• Scissors
• Ruler

Step 1
If your recipe box isn’t already a solid color, give it a few coats of paint. We kept the outside white but added a pop of color inside. Let dry completely.

Step 2
To make a checked pattern like we did, cut 1/2″ wide strips of tissue paper in various colors. We used tissue to match this tea towel set.

Step 3
Lay out the strips onto the recipe box, spacing them out as you like.

Step 4
Remove one of the tissue strips, and use your brush to apply a line of Mod Podge where you want that tissue strip to sit. Gently lay the tissue back onto the box, pressing to adhere it to the Mod Podge. Repeat this in the other colors.

Step 5
Keep working in this way so that the tissue strips wrap around the box on all sides.

Step 6
Once you’ve attached all your strips, your box should look something like this!

Step 7
Finally, apply a coat of Mod Podge over the entire exterior of the recipe box to seal the tissue. Make sure to leave the box open when doing this so that it doesn’t get sealed shut as it dries!
