Three Winter Hygge Crafts

Have you heard of “hygge” before? Now that winter is here and the holidays are almost upon us, we’re all about embracing coziness and enjoying the moment! We find that spending time crafting with our family and friends is a great way to slow down, be mindful, and relax a little bit. Today we’re sharing three coordinated crafts that are simple to do and will have you feeling cozy and warm both in crafting them and enjoying them afterwards.

We went with an evergreen tree theme for these crafts – we think they’ll be a nice transition from the holiday season into the new year without being too holiday specific. You could use other designs in the same way – stars, snowflakes, whatever you like! We painted the trees onto a thrifted tray, a plain mug (perfect for a cup of hot tea!), and crafted popsicle stick tree ornaments. All three of these crafts are very simple to do and really allow you to get cozy, put on some music or a movie, and relax while you craft. Keep reading to see more photos!

what you need:

Step 1
If painting a tray, give it a coat of fresh paint! We used Martha Stewart Crafts Vintage Decor Paint in white. Let dry completely.

Step 2
Paint your tree design (or whatever you like) onto the tray. We drew a few trees in pencil first as a guide, and freestyled a few in between them. Painting the trees on takes about 45 minutes or so, but the repetitiveness is relaxing. When done, let dry.

Step 3
To decorate a mug to match your tray, clean the surface with alcohol and the paint normally. Let cure for 21 days and then your mug will be top rack dishwasher safe.

Step 4
To make matching tree ornaments, cut wooden popsicle sticks and coffee stir sticks. Glue together with a hot glue gun to form mini evergreen trees!

Step 5
Paint your trees in shades of green and let dry.

Step 6
Cut a piece of string and tie into a loop. Hot glue to the back of the tree.

Happy crafting!!
