My eighth grade shop class teacher, Mr. Benson, introduced me to the world of power tools, saws, and miter boxes. From that day on, the world was my toolbox! When 60 women showed up for the Handmade Charlotte + Home Depot Do-It-Herself (DIH) workshop, I imagined Mr. B beaming with pride. Decked out in heels and aprons, it was a sawdust-covered soirée. When I asked how many women were holding drills for the first time, more than half the hands in the room shot up. But with a little bit of elbow grease and lots of girl power, our lighted holiday marquees came together in no time at all. You could see everyone’s confidence growing as they all grabbed tools, attempted new things, shared tricks and tips, laughed and supported one another, and built something great together.
