how-to:

Step 1
For each ornament, cut out a front and two matching back pieces from colorful felt. Cut out one rectangle for the hanger. To make this Advent calendar, we chose five colors of felt for the baubles and cut five ornaments from each color.

Step 2
Embroider a face on the front piece for each ornament. Thread a needle with six strands of floss black embroidery floss. Stitch the eyes with French knots and the mouth with a scallop stitch. You can mark the pattern with a pencil or just freehand it…it will always come out cute!
TIP: If you’d like to skip the embroidery, you can also paint these faces with acrylic paint and a toothpick, or leave it off altogether and decorate the baubles with other felt shapes.

Step 3
Fold the rectangle piece in half and place it at the top of the ornament and then layer the two half pieces on top.You can do this either way, but we placed the top half first, then the bottom half. The edges should overlap a little.

Pinning or clipping these together as you move on to the next step is helpful. We used Wonder Clips for sewing.

Small wrapped candies are always fun to find inside an Advent calendar, and both peppermints and chocolates work well here. You can also write out a few activities or perhaps some silly holiday jokes and slip them into the pouches. Small toys, charms, erasers or hair ties are also perfect filler!

Since these are ornaments, you can use string to make little tied hanging loops so you can display one or 25 on your tree.

You can also hang the bauble pouches on string as a garland! Leave them on the string as you remove the contents from an ornament each day in December. The garland will look cute, even as you empty the felt pouches.

Happy crafting!
