DIY Candy Bats

DIY Candy Bats

Have you ever checked out the bat exhibit at your local zoo? They have a reputation for being creepy, but I’m sure their sweet little faces won you over! I mean, they probably haven’t reached cuddle-status, but they’re pretty stinkin’ adorable! For Halloween this year, we decided to make these simple candy bats to put on a cake or cupcakes for a fun celebration.

They are easy enough for a child to assemble, and only require some cutting assistance from an adult. I also love that you can go with traditional orange for Halloween, or add a little pink, green and blue to spice it up. In my opinion, pink belongs in every holiday palette!

Step 5
Mix a small bowl of powdered sugar with milk until it is about the same consistency as glue. Use this frosting mix to glue a gray sprinkle onto the plain side of an eyeball sprinkle to create eyes for your bat. Set aside.

Step 6
Create your first wing by placing two different colored triangles from steps 2 & 3 together with the points facing in opposite directions. Place the side of the triangle from step 1 on the side of the triangle of a different color. Repeat this step with the other three triangles, creating a mirror image of the first wing.

Step 7
To assemble your bat, place a giant Smarties candy in the middle of your cupcake. Place a wing on each side of the Smarties, near the top of the middle. Take the two skinny triangle Starburst pieces leftover from the middle triangle of a wing, and place them at the top of the Smarties (for ears). Place the two tiny white triangles at the middle of the bottom of the Smarties candy, with the points facing down, to look like fang teeth. Use a tiny dab of the powdered sugar frosting to glue the eyes at the top of the Smarties.
