DIY Pinecone Father’s Day Cards

DIY Pinecone Father's Day Cards

Show dad how much you care with these simple DIY Father’s Day cards! I’ve had pinecones on the brain lately since they’ve been all over the trail that I take daily walks on. I collected a bunch of them for these DIY moths from a few weeks ago and had some leftover sitting on my desk. I realized that they could look a lot like mustaches if arranged just so! At first I thought I would try to make them into beards as well, but they started to get pretty large and take over the card without looking as much like beards as I had hoped, so for these ones I just stuck with mustaches. They could also make great bushy eyebrows too!

If there aren’t so many pinecones around where you live, not to worry, you can use this same idea but with pine needles, flowers, grass, sticks, leaves … whatever you can find outside! And no need to limit yourself to mustaches either – hair, eyebrows, and beards are all fun options to play around with. Whatever you and your kids choose to do, I’m betting they’ll put a big smile on dad’s face this Father’s Day!

what you need:

  • Blank white cardboard
  • Craft knife
  • Cutting mat
  • Small pinecones
  • Markers
  • Hot glue gun
  • Stamps
  • Inkpad
  • Pencil
  • Eraser

how-to:

Step 1
Gather up some small pinecones on your next walk on a trail or around your neighborhood. If you can’t find small pinecones like these ones, you could also forage for other mustache options! Pine needles, cedar branches, sticks, flowers, and grass are all great alternatives if that’s what you have available.

Step 2
Based on the size of your pinecones (or whatever you’re using as the mustaches) cut out a piece of cardboard to fit them. I used cardboard that was already plain white, but you can of course use brown cardboard as-is or paint cardboard to be whatever color you like. If painting, make sure to let dry completely before moving onto the next step.

Step 3
Set two pinecones onto the cardboard in a mustache shape and use a pencil to draw a face around it. Have fun with different expressions and features! Once you’re happy with the face, use a marker to go over the pencil lines and erase any visible pencil markings if necessary. You can even use googly eyes and other craft supplies to make the faces extra silly if you want – pipe cleaners would make great hair or eyebrows!

Step 3
On the back of the card, use stamps and an inkpad to write out “Happy Father’s Day!” or a custom message for your dad. Decorate with markers and special notes!

Step 4
Finally, apply a line of hot glue onto the back of each pinecone and glue them in place onto the face, holding them in place until secure. Voila!
